New BMW M3 engine powered by Pectel (written by PI Research)

29 July 2008

Building on the success of using the Pectel SQ6M12 to run the new BMW V10,
our distributor, KMS Racing Engines is now also supplying the new BMW S65 V8
with a Pectel SQ6M ECU.

The S65 is the engine used in the new BMW M3, a naturally-aspirated
DOHC 32-valve unit. Derived from the BMW S85 V10 engine used in the
M5 and M6, the S65 shares the same basic architecture and aluminium
construction. The S65 shares the same 92 mm bore and 75.2 mm stroke
cylinder dimensions with the S85 V10, along with the quad VANOS variable
timing system, which provides continuous adjustability of all four cams.
However, the V8 does differ in a number of crucial aspects from its V10
parent. The VANOS system is operated from engine oil-pressure, negating
the need for a separate high-pressure hydraulic system as fitted to the
S85. A conventional wet-sump lubrication system with two oil pumps
replaces the three-pump dry sump system used on the V10, further
decreasing weight. The alternator disconnects from the engine during
acceleration to maximise power, only charging the battery during
braking whenever possible, in a system BMW calls Brake Energy Regeneration.
Other notable features of the engine include lightweight iron-coated
aluminium pistons, steel-magnesium connecting rods, forged steel
crankshaft and eight throttle butterflies. The resulting engine
weighs 202 kg (445 lb): 15 kg (33 lb) lighter than the straight-6
engine it replaces, while also being shorter.

BMW V10 powered by Pectel ECU (written by PI Research)

Working with two of our distributors, Apex Speed Technology in the US
and KMS Racing in Europe, the SQ6M12 ECU has been used to run the BMW
V10 engine as found in the E60 M5 and E63 M6 with great success.

The S85B50 is a high-revving engine designed to utilize power from a
wide rev band. The standard engine has a redline of 8250 rpm, achieves
over 100 bhp (70 kW)/litre and features a very high compression ratio
of 12.0:1, beating the previous M3 of 11.5:1

• 5.0 Litre V10 engine, 507 hp (378 kW) @ 7750rpm/520 N·m (384 ft·lbf)
torque @ 6100rpm
• Cast aluminum block with bed plate design split at the crankshaft axis
• Cast aluminum heads with four valves per cylinder and CNC machined
ports and combustion chambers
• Valves are actuated though non-rotating inverted bucked cam followers
• Oil cooled forged aluminum pistons from Mahle Motorsport
• Forged steel crankshaft with counterweights
• Quad VANOS system which varies both intake and exhaust cam phasing
• 10 individual electronically controlled throttles
• Quasi-dry sump lubricating system

With the Pectel implementation this engine uses the stock sensors with
no extra boxes or drivers needed! The SQ6M12 runs the fully functional
dual vanos, electric oil pumps and its 10 cylinders fully sequentially
to make over 600HP. Thanks to our carefully engineered system,
the engine started and ran the first time - no additional changed
or mods were needed. For further information please contact KMS Racing
